      Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations
system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the
global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development
of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under
review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and
the international community for action. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio
de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for
'sustainable development' . One of the key agreements adopted at Rio was
the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Convention establishes three
main goals: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use
of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits
from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on
Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by
UNEP. Under the day-day supervision of the Principal Officer,
Implementation and Technical Support, SCBD, the incumbent will perform
the following functions: 1. Implement the relevant activities of the
Communication, Education and Public Awareness programme of work and
related outreach activities of the Division of Implementation and
Technical Support (ITS) through monitoring and analyzing current events,
developments, public opinion and press coverage, identitying issues and
trends of significance to SCBD and advise management on appropriate
responses and actions. 2. Serve as lead media and communications expert
and shape, drive and monitor the design, development and delivery of an
effective communication strategy for SCBD which is integrated with the
UNEP-wide strategy based on a clear understanding of the risks,
sensitivities and opportunities through planning and development of a
pro-active outreach programme to increase public awareness of the
Convention and more specifically the work of SCBD in Canada as well as
globally and in consultation with SCBD divisions, identify and produce
well-targeted information/ communication and public awareness products
such as feature articles, thematic briefing notes and media briefings. 3.
Development, coaching and mentoring of communications staff in the SCBD
through identification of keynote speakers for CBD events and preparation
of high quality, state of the art standard presentation kit and
information materal for use by SCBD staff in conferences, speaking
engagements, seminars and workshops. 4. Create and maintain networks of
communications contacts with the media, national focal points and others
in support of SCBD outreach activities.
