The
United Nations has designated 2001-2010 as the
"International Decade for a Culture of Peace
and Non-Violence for the Children of the World" and 2005-2014 as the "United
Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable
Development." Additionally, 2010 celebrates the International
Year of Youth as well as the International Year for the Rapprochement of
Cultures. Young people are
encouraged to participate in these global initiatives and play a leading role
in promoting peace and understanding among all cultures.

EC Call For Proposal on Non-State Actors and Local
Authorities in Development
The
European Commission (EC) has a long-standing relationship and cooperation
with non-governmental and other civil society organisations as well as with
local and decentralised authorities in the field of development. It is part
of the European Union's (EU) commitment to
fighting poverty and promoting the rule of law and adherence to fundamental
freedoms set out in Article 177 (former Article 130u) of the Lisbon Treaty.
The
thematic programme “Non-State Actors and Local Authorities in Development”,
introduced in 2007, should be seen as the successor of the above
budget-lines. The overarching objective of this programme is poverty
reduction in the context of sustainable development, including the pursuit of
the
Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and other
internationally agreed targets. Read more
