A reference in a BSDI manpage led to this reference in the BSDI inetd.conf:
# Services run ONLY on the Kerberos server

#kpasswd stream tcp nowait root /usr/libexec/kpasswdd kpasswdd
DESCRIPTION
Act as a registration agent for a Kerberos domain.
and it seems to be about registering users in the kerberos
database... but all I've found beyond that is empty directories in old
CVS repositories. It does suggest that it "first appeared in BSD 4.4"...
