I don't think this is the case, I think the answer is "already installed".

Why "instead"?

But, it already does provide "kernel":

$ rpm -q --provides kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.12.12mdk-1-1mdk
kernel = 2.6.12
alsa
kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.6.12.12mdk = 1-1mdk


Maybe you need to be more specific/precise?
