It wrote 2 lines of text on the display: [0.239991] pup 00:05: can't evaluate __CRS: 12298 [4.2717170] ACPI PCC probe failed and hung. I created a dvd with Ubuntu-12.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso and booted the same computer with that. It merely hung the machine with a black screen. In addition to what is actually wrong, the error messages are singularly unfriendly and unhelpful. A better message would include a URL the user could visit for an explanation and what to do next.
