This has been tracked to a bug in our cloud disk image cloning tool
creating corrupt qcow images.

  Attempting to load the aufs kernel module results in an error

  $ sudo modprobe aufs

  $ file /lib/modules/3.13.0-77-generic/modules.dep.bin
