I did an update (15.10 -> 16.04). After GRUB selects Ubuntu in standard configuration (Linux 4.4.0-21-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Apr 18 18:34:49 UTC 2016 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux), the screen turns immediately black and within seconds the screen signals "No cable attached". If I select the recovery mode in GRUB, the system boots fine in text- mode. From there I'm able to start X in 1280x1014 configuration (default: 1920x1080). I use the internal GPU of my Intel CPU with HDMI (no additional GPU available in my PC).
