If your one of the other people that this bug affects, it might help if you all mark at the very top "this bug affects me" if you have not already done so. Currently it only shows that it affects 3 people including myself and i think more than that have chimed in and said that it also affects them.
Tim, while i'm not an expert, kernel issues like this don't usually crop up, but sometimes they do. Usually they are reported and fixed before an LTS release, but only if enough people notice it and report it. In this case i assume that while this affects many people, most people are unaffected and if they were never thought to report it to the bug system. Perhaps this only affects a certain type or two of processors in the kernel code. From what i can tell this particular bug may have originated in the last few non-LTS releases, but the people who reported them did not provide enough information and they expired and were left unfixed. In this case i think this bug is making significant progress on helping the kernel people information to narrow down where the problem is and hopefully allow them to fix it soon since i have helped test the latest upstream kernels (which all have the problem) but also tested an old kernel (which does not have the problem). If any of you want to try testing the upstream kernels like i was instructed and also test the old working kernel i mentioned it couldn't hurt to have someone else reproduce and confirm my findings. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kernel Packages, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575467 Title: Ubuntu 16.04 consistently freezes up / hangs Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: After upgrading from stock Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04 my laptop consistently freezes up and is unresponsive to keyboard or mouse. The only way is to do a hard shutdown. I'm usually in a browser when this happens, and often watching a video or two. It seems to happen more often in Google Chrome than Firefox, but it happens with both. It has happened at least once with no videos loaded. I haven’t observed it freeze / hang when I’m not in a browser, but that's mainly what i use my laptop for, so that's where most of my time is spent.
