Thank you for the tip! Actually the CPU/GPU is pretty new, so the
support definitely improved since kernel 4.4 (I think that the support
for this GPU has been added in 4.3; kernel 4.4 had artifacts of hiding
mouse cursor, 4.8 works pretty decently, apart from the abovementioned
reported issue).
Installed 4.10 as suggested: Linux mavi-vaadin 4.10.0-041000-generic
#201702191831 SMP Sun Feb 19 23:33:19 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Unfortunately the issue persists - once the primary display (laptop display) is
turned off, secondary display FPS drops to 1-0.5 FPS and cannot be reasonably
worked with.

Title:
UI performance slow (0,5fps) when I disable primary notebook display
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
I'm running Intel® HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2) onboard on Intel®
Core™ i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz × 8. I have an external monitor attached
via miniDP. Since I prefer to work on one screen only, I tend to
disable the built-in display and only use the monitor.
However, when I launch Display settings and try to turn off Built-in
Display, it works (primary display is turned off while external
monitor shows UI output). The problem is that the desktop UI is
unbearably slow (0,5 FPS), so it is even hard to target the "Cancel"
button on the "Would you like to keep the settings" dialog. Luckily,
the display setting reverts automatically :-)
Since I only use one display, I have then enable "Mirror display"
which uses suboptimal 1920x1080 on my 1920x1200 monitor. It's fine,
but it's not perfect ;)
Thank you so much!
