Turns out that the machine won't boot with linux-image-3.11.0-12-generic, but *will* boot with the old ringtail kernel linux-image-3.8.0-31-generic! I created two screenshots, one shows the point where the boot process with the Saucy kernel stops (after enabling the swap), and another picture of the boot process with the ringtail kernel AFTER successfully enabling the swap. This bug report was generated on 3.8.0-31, since I can't get 3.11 to boot...
