I (original reporter) am ok on raring, but bad on saucy with Mobility
Radeon HD 5850.

by installing the linux-image-3.11.4-031104-generic package from
mainline kernel builds, I was able to follow the DebuggingKernelBoot
directions. After the text boot, it switched to a blank/black X VT, but
I *was* able to switch via ctrl+alt+f1 to log into a text prompt. then
killed gdm/X from there, and tried a startx. again got a black screen,
but noticed some fglrx related errors (due to no fglrx module built?) in
the vt1 console which i was able to swtich back to via ctrl+alt+f1.
edited xorg.conf to use ati driver instead of fglrx and tried startx
again. in this case, was *not* able to switch via ctrl+alt+f1
anymore....

what else should I look at to provide more useful information?
