Thanks.

System has been working normally since reporting this bug, without
further prompts to report a system problem.

According to man apt-get, sudo apt-get install -f is the same as the
sudo apt --fix-broken install that I have already ran. I ran the sudo
apt-get clean and sudo apt-get update commands that you described,
followed by sudo apt-get upgrade. One new package version was detected
and installed, so my system seems to be OK now.

Should we close this bug or try to figure out what went wrong?

Title:
  package linux-image-4.10.0-24-generic 4.10.0-24.28 failed to
install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error
  exit status 128

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Update stalled.
Rebooted, ignored prompt to report system problem, and ran sudo apt-get
upgrade. Was advised to run sudo dpkg --configure -a
Did that and ran sudo apt-get upgrade again. Was advised packages had unmet
dependencies and to run sudo apt --fix-broken install
Did that and ran sudo apt-get upgrade again. Packages were downloaded and
installed. Ran ldconfig and sudo ldconfig just in case it was necessary.
Rebooted and was prompted again to report system problem, so I am doing so
now.
