If HDMI is selected and the cable removed the dialog shows that Speakers are selected. But there is no audio. To actually output audio to speakers one needs to click some other output ("Simultaneous output ...") and then again on Speakers. The expected behaviour would be to actually play audio on the speakers without the need to switch forth and back.
