** Description changed: After upgrade to 4.4.0-109, the system won't boot any more. At the first boot tentative, the following message is shown and the system freezes: "Failure reading sector 0xbbcfd0 from hd0" Upon retry, a kernel panic is shown (see attached screen hard copy) Going back to 4.4.0-104.127-generic solved the problem. I've been able to reproduce this bug in a consistent way: I tried several times to go boot into 4.0.0-109 and the system froze with the described behaviour, but booting into 4.0.0-104 always worked. I have checked the bug reports concerning kernel panic after upgrade to 4.4.0-108, but this problem seems to be different: I experience this problem after upgrading to 4.4.0-109, which presumably fixed the problem reported the other bug reports (I don't know if my configuration would've worked with 108, because I have not updated during a week) $ cat /proc/cpuinfo processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 16 model : 5 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) II X3 455 Processor stepping : 3 microcode : 0x10000c8 cpu MHz : 800.000 cache size : 512 KB physical id : 0 siblings : 3 core id : 0 cpu cores : 3 apicid : 0 initial apicid : 0 fpu : yes fpu_exception : yes cpuid level : 5 wp : yes flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 ht syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt pdpe1gb rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow constant_tsc rep_good nopl nonstop_tsc extd_apicid pni monitor cx16 popcnt lahf_lm cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy abm sse4a misalignsse 3dnowprefetch osvw ibs skinit wdt nodeid_msr hw_pstate vmmcall npt lbrv svm_lock nrip_save bugs : tlb_mmatch fxsave_leak sysret_ss_attrs bogomips : 6629.24 TLB size : 1024 4K pages clflush size : 64 cache_alignment : 64 address sizes : 48 bits physical, 48 bits virtual power management: ts ttp tm stc 100mhzsteps hwpstate [... and two more identical cpus] + --- + ApportVersion: 2.20.1-0ubuntu2.15 + Architecture: amd64 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USER PID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: administrator 1879 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/controlC2: administrator 1879 F.... pulseaudio + /dev/snd/controlC1: administrator 1879 F.... pulseaudio + CurrentDesktop: XFCE + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 16.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=4483f480-1b20-4b71-8f19-8ae0b8239101 + InstallationDate: Installed on 2012-08-21 (1979 days ago) + InstallationMedia: Xubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120425) + IwConfig: + lo no wireless extensions. + + eth0 no wireless extensions. + JournalErrors: + Error: command ['journalctl', '-b', '--priority=warning', '--lines=1000'] failed with exit code 1: Hint: You are currently not seeing messages from other users and the system. + Users in the 'systemd-journal' group can see all messages.
