Mario Veygel, as per http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4132&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5314070#N1301 an update is available for your BIOS (F.26). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything?
If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Under Ubuntu the cpu fan kicks in frequently even if the cpu is idle (according to various system monitors. The HW temperature applet shows the temperature going up to 56°C, then the fan kicks in and brings it down to ca. 48°C. The fan stops until the temp is up again to 56°C, where it kicks in again etc. When booting Win8, the idle temperature is stable at 40 °C, and the fan never runs unless the PC is busy long enough that the core temp goes into the 50°C range, which only happens when playing videos etc. This is not only annoying because of the fan noise, but also reduces the battery runtime significantly compared to Win8.
