My system had this disk configuration running 20.04.3 LTS server (fresh
install, not upgrade) without issue:
1 SATA SSD ext4 on internal 6Gb SATA port was /dev/sda with 20.04.3 LTS server
OS installed.
1 SATA disk ext4 on internal 6Gb SATA port was /dev/sdb
8 SATA disks ext4 on LSI Megaraid 9240-8i in IT mode was /dev/sd[cdefghij]
2 SATA disks (mdraid1) on internal 3Gb SATA ports was /dev/sd[kl]

apt upgrade from 5.4.0-7x kernel booting any current linux-image-5.4.0-8x
kernel now looks like this:
8 SATA disks ext4 on LSI Megaraid 9240-8i in IT mode are /dev/sd[abcdefgh]
1 SATA SSD ext4 on internal 6Gb SATA port is now /dev/sdi with 20.04.3 OS
installed.
1 SATA disk ext4 on internal 6Gb SATA port now /dev/sdj with 20.04.3 OS
installed.
2 SATA disks (mdraid1) on internal 3Gb SATA ports is /dev/sd[kl]

The system boots, but any utils e.g. smartd, hdparm etc. referencing
/dev/sda are now fubared.

Booting any 5.4.0-7x kernel enumerates the disks correctly.
Booting any 5.4.0-8x kernel enumerates the disks incorrectly as described above.
Booting latest Mainline kernel 5.15.0-051500rc3-generic enumerates the disks
correctly.
