Public bug reported:

Hello, sometimes minetest hangs for tens of seconds, sometimes it just
crashes (interrupted (core dumped)), but sometimes it makes the complete
machine unrecoverably freeze which makes me believe it's a kernel (gpu
driver?) level issue.

steps to reproduce:
1, have an up-to-date ubuntu 22.04 lts installed
2. compile minetest from source: 587f6656a
3. play

expected result: user having fun, machine not crashing
actual result: machine crashing, hanging temporarily, game crashing

Thank you for the fix in advance.
