  Rebooted my system and at the luks/crypt password entry screen, I was
  able to type about half my password when the system locked up and became
  unresponsive.  Hard poweroff was the only thing that worked.  Same
  problem in recovery mode at the text prompt for the crypt password.  saw

  Eventually was able to boot successfully by waiting a while before
  typing the password, and typing it very slowly.  no idea what triggered
