Following a kernel update from

to

I am unable to start the graphical user session.
That is, the machine boots as usual, but the login screen does not load.
Command line sessions (TTYs) can be accessed via keyboard short cuts
[Ctrl+Alt+F2-7] and used for login. However, attempts to switch back to the
X-session/GUI [Ctrl+Alt+F1] results just in a black screen.
Reverting back to the previous kernel version (5.15.0-116.126~20.04.1)
allows me to log into the graphical session as usual, suggesting the
issue is due to a regression-update of the kernel and not a (new) bug
associated with X.org.
As my system uses an NVIDIA graphics card, I tried to use both
proprietary (nvidia-driver-535) and
open-source (x-server-xorg-video-nouveau) graphics drivers with kernel version
5.15.0-117-generic,
alas it doesn't work in either case.
I attach an apport report generated with following command:
apport-cli linux-image-5.15.0-117-generic --save ./apport.txt # Will gladly
provide additional information if specified what is needed.
