When I look at /var/log/kern.log , I see multiple occurrences of the message, "INFO: task btrfs-transacti:379 blocked for more than 120 seconds" with a stack trace. (see attached /var/log/kern.lorg) It may or may not be relevant that my home directory is on ecryptfs, my swap is 16GB and encrypted (but doesn't seem to be being used during boot up).
