I tried as you suggested, but dmesg shows nothing after a failed ls.

However, I tried cp a testfile to the drive and it succeeded; and I was
able to cp it back. I just cannot read the directories with ls, nor
with any application I've tried (e.g. nautilus, rhythmbox).

I then successfully cd to the mounted server (where ls again returned an I/O
error) and successfully launched gedit to edit the file I had cp'd to the NAS;
when I tried to save the file I received an error "Could not save the file
“/mnt/musicserver/testfile2.txt”.Error renaming temporary file: Input/output
error"
However, I was able to successful "save as" to the NAS and the cp the edited
file back to my machine.

After all the above, there is still nothing notable in dmesg, but I did
find the following in the log files which might be helpful:

18:18:44 tracker-extract: (tracker-extract-3:106881): GLib-GIO-WARNING **:

(note that I was using my manual mountpoint to do the above tests, not
gvfs, though I did have the Files app open at the same time)

I also found earlier in the logfile:

Title:
File I/O access to SMB1 error - regression?

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Access to an old SMB1 NAS server stopped working with recent upgrades.
Mount is successful, but any attempted access (e.g. ls) returns
  "Input/output error"

I have installed and booted (on a 24.04 system) with various mainline
kernels to see when it broke. It worked up till 6.7.0-060700, but
  does not work with 6.8.0-060800

I have other systems with slightly different record:
   A Lubuntu 22.04 system - file I/O works with 6.2.0-37, but not with 6.8.0-40
A Studio 22.04 file I/O does not work with any of the low latency kernels I
have installed - oldest is 5.19.0-1025-lowlatency; it did work before upgrade
to 22.04
A Gallium distro build on 18.4 with 4.16.18-galliumos kernel works fine in
all respects

I have various mount lines on different machines which all worked
prior and then started failing, e.g. <<mount -t cifs -o
  vers=1.0,guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8 //[IP address/folder]/
  /mnt/mountpoint>>

A related issue is that gvfs mounts initiated from nautilus etc. fall
over on these newer releases too. Not sure if this is the same issue.
