Lockups only occur infrequently - perhaps once every day or two days - so testing this is going to be slow and problematic. So far, rolling back to the trusty kernel seems to have fixed it, so it seems unlikely to be a hardware problem. I'm going to reboot into http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel- ppa/mainline/v3.17.4-vivid/ now and run with that for a few days.
