Partially solved to prevent symptoms. Documented at:

With 2.6.22 the boot lock-up problems were even worse.

Basically solved with 2.6.22 as follows:
   - any version of gensplash / bootsplash could lockup VESA on this
     machine if compiled-in
   - SLUB and full preemption seem to sometimes misbehave when
     initializing kernel state or hardware
   - VESA driver needs a very explicit mode to disable EDID and
     BIOS-based frequency changing
   - libata does better when loaded from initramfs than compiled-in
