I think for one or two devices your way is fine. For testing you can
just have the script /sbin/hotplug run the commant echo $* and
printenv. The only place I've used /sbin/hotplug was in openwrt
kamikaze.  The way they do it is /sbin/hotplug is a dispatcher script
and it calls scripts in /etc/hotplug.d/*.  For your case I feel what
you are doing is simplier.

BTW lookig forward to the new Robert Love book I will be passing the
