OK - I did some more testing. It's looking like a bug with an old compiler I was using (a custom Sony build of gcc version 4.1.1), and may be related to a mishandling of the _weak function attribute. Both 3.0 and 3.1.0-rc2 using a different compiler don't have the problem.
