A personal branch is relative easy to set up. At least it wasn't very hard for 
me, just follow these instructions: 

https://help.launchpad.net/Code/UploadingABranch

When using this command:
bzr push lp:~userid/project-name/branch-name

Just replace the "project-name" with "kicad" and choose a branch name.
