Thanks for the input. I figured it might be on my end. I'm running a
32 MinGW build of KiCad on 64-bit windows 7 (both home premium and
professional). I've been building wxWidgets as individual DLLs instead
of static libraries so maybe that has something to do with it. It's not
terribly disruptive since this is not my normal work pattern. I just
happen to stumble across it and I wanted to be sure that it didn't
effect anyone else.

The about screen says "Build: (2013-02-01 BZR 3827)-testing". However it
also says "on 32 Bits Windows" below that, while I am definitely running
a 64 bit install of Windows, which seems odd to me.
When I clicked the save button to save the new module into a new
library, I did not experience a crash.
However for some reason my kicad/share folder appears empty when I open
it in windows explorer, but inside of Pcbnew I can clearly see the
modules subdirectory and the foo.mod file I just created. Any idea
what's up with that?!?! The "disappearing files" have little brown
padlock icons next to them inside Pcbnew (see screenshot).

I appears to be a 64-bit and/or Windows 7 issue. Someone out there with
64-bit Windows XP and/or 64-bit Windows 7 please see if you have this
problem. If not, then it's something on my end.
