This is/was not a problem for me. It seems logical to open kicad, then click to select the function group (eeschema, etc.) For me, there is no need to allow individual plugins to be executed without kicad.

Having the hierarchical arrangement allows inheriting data from the kicad shell - like project name for example.

No. That change was done on intention - everything is in a single
bundle/application now to avoid duplicating all the libraries or
inter-application dependencies introduced by symlinks (as it was before).
At the moment you just can start everything via the KiCad launcher.

My next changes will bring back the possibility to start eeschema/etc.
individually… stay tuned.

This is curious - I built r 5173 a couple of days ago and in the bin directory
adjacent to the build directory, I have only kicad.app All of the other pieces
of kicad are in Plugin directories under the kicad.app directory.

When I put a link to kicad.app into my /Applications directory, there are no
other applications (eeschema..) visible when I look at Applications in the
Finder - thus it is not possible to start pcbnew before kicad as there is no
icon in Applications to double click on to start pcbnew - all of the pieces
(eeschema, pcbnew..) are started from the icons at the top of the kicad window.

Is this what you are seeing?

My build does not have any scripting enabled.
But the problem is easy to reproduce. Just start pcbnew before eeschema, and
eeschema is totally unusable as the screen is an ugly reddish color and I could
not find a way to fix it.
Happens here too, with BZR 5173. No scripting, WxWidgets 3.0.0.
