I agree that presistent rulers would be nice, but saving into the files will take a format bump. I opened an issue for it for people to put their comments on:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1676814 Perhaps a ruler graticule around the preview window would work? Something like the Inkscape rulers? It would be useful in Pcbnew too. Might take a bit of fiddling to get a neat implementation, but it would avoid having to mandate extra rulers in all footprints (which, if supported, could still be used in certain useful cases). As an aside, can bug reporters/feature requesters /please/ not just chuck extra requests into existing bugs or issues. When the main issue gets closed first, your comment, no matter how insightful, will be probably be ignored forever. Open a new issue and put all the details you can in that. Add a link to/from the original if that will help. It's a waste of everyone's time to pick out random comments from semi-related issues into their own issues.
