Morning gents,
I am not referring to footprints, but schematic symbols. They ship with kicad main installer.
So my modification has no dependency on footprint libs - neither required nor introduced.
Starting KiCad is as fast as usual, opening a schematic gives approx 3 sec delay. On a 9 year old Mac Pro with 8 GB RAM.
I totally agree on not wasting CPU/RAM resources, imho this is not applicable here.
Instructing a user there are more symbols - how would you do hat? In the fine manual that never gets read? At least not with that attention to detail in the beginning? Any explanation means a two fold invest: Energy spent by developers creating and maintaining it and time spent by user on understanding it.
Needed symbols vary greatly between users, so it is way more natural that each user decides which symbols HE needs - once he has seen the whole offering.

PS: I am a KiCAd newbie, every kink I stumble across is going to be hit by others as well. It is all about smoothening the learning curve.

Does the default lib list ship with the kicad-lib or the kicad main program?
I think it should be the former so that the kicad-lib provides the defaults based on whatever libraries they deem stable and default, and kicad program reads in the lib list and loads the libraries in that list. Yes kicad will be dependent on kicad-lib in order to have any default libraries at all, but assuming people maintain kicad-lib it shouldn't be a problem.
I too found it annoying that a lot of libraries were not loaded by default and I had to add them manually.
