Depends on exactly what you have downloaded....

modules and libraries live in their own directories under 
/usr/share/kicad/share/...

(or under kicad/share/... on windows)

Obvioiusly a lib or module can be placed in there. However if you only
have a single component you may want to add them to an existing library
(one of your own not the standard set) in which case you may want to
import the devices into one such lib, and the same for the module.


Open up PCBnew and select help, there is a chapter on libs and modules
which will explain quite a lot of things for you.

Remember if you use your own libs and modules, you will have to ADD them
to the project in order to use them.
