I know this is not my issue, but I have successfully backported kicad 2009 to debian lenny in the past. However, one important thing I had to do was to remove the fglrx or nvidia driver (they pack a libGL that dpkg doesn't like) and use any open source video driver just for the building process. It works like a charm.
