GAROET.

Garoet 710 M. above the sea-level, 233 K. M. from Buitenzorg, built on the
Tjimanoek, is a very interesting and nice place, entirely surrounded by
volcanos. The well-managed hotel "Hork" close to the railway-station is
quite comfortable, spacious rooms and very good table.

On the aloon-aloon (main square are the messigit (Mahometan place of
worship), the barracks for the Pradjoerit (native constabulary), the
assistent-resident's house and office. The kaboepaten or palace of the
Regent faces one side of the aloon-aloon. The post-and telegraph-office is
at the railway-station.

Strangers can be introduced in the Societeit or Club "Intramontes", by one
of the members.

The Regent who has the title of "Radhen Adipatiā€ is a well-educated,
civilized and humane man.

When a performance of the "wajang" is given in the "Dalem" it is not
difficult to get admission through the intervention of one of the gentlemen
invited.

The "Radhen Ajoe" or Regent's Consort is a very amiable woman, who speaks,
Dutch fluently.

Near Tjilimoes, 5 paals S. W. from Garoet and in the neighbourhood of paal
no. 2, also on the way to Tjisoeroepan a beautiful view is to be obtained
on the lavastream of Goenoeng Goentoer and near Waroeng Tragak, 4 paals
from that place, another view on the Papandajang-crater.

We recommend a trip to this crater as it is feasible for ladies also; one
can go in a cart to Tjisoeroepan (12 mniles for f 5 40), from where one is
carried in a kind of

39

pallanquin (sedan-chair) to the pasangrahan and thence throngh the aid of
the tjamat or head of the dessa to the crater or kawa (Papandajang). One
can go also on ponies. A riding pony f 3.50; a followers pony f 2; a
djoelie or pallanquin f 3.50, a guide f 0.15; a coolie f 050.

Three miles north-westward of Garoet lies the village of Trogong 735 M.
above sea-level; a carriage for f 2 1/2, a cart for f 1.

>From there one can go to the warm baths (Tjipanaa) or the little lakes
Sitoe Bagendit or Sitoe Leles. Between Sitoe Bagendit and Trogong near the
village Bodjong Salam, a remarkable colony of kalongs (bats or pteropus
edulis) is found.

A trip to the crater of Telaga Bodas and the Valley of Death is very
interesting.

>From the village of Pandaharan (7 miles) near the halt Wanaradja one can go
on ponies or in a djoelie (pallanquin) to the kawa or crater being a
distance of 9 miles in 2 1/2 hours.

The Goenoeng Galoengoeng is very difficult and dangerous of ascent, 2229 M.
above the sea. It requires 3 a 4 days, to reach the top.

>From Garoet a path leads via Paroentas to the kawa which cannot be
recommended; it is better to take the road of Penjoe-Soegan (distr. Tjiawi)
and go on horseback to Greba, where 15 to 20 coolies must be engaged for
carrying provisions etc. and from there to Gentong (Passir heulang) thus
proceeding to the plain of Gombong, where one has to pass the night before
ascending the cone on the following day. It is indispensable to take with
one some blankets and provisions for 5 days, because there is no saying
what may happen.

The ascent of the Goenoeng Goentoer (2244 above the sea) is very difficult.
The Goenoeng Tjicorai is an extinguished volcano (2817 M. above the sea).
At the foot of that mountain is the fine tea-plantation Tjikadjang.

Along a splendid road we can proceed from Garoet to

40

Mangoenredja (25 miles); the fare in a carriage is f 15 and in a cart f 8,
via Singaparna to Tassikmalaja f 23 and f 12 and to Manondjaja one pays for
a carriage f 27 and for n cart f 14. A carriage from Garoet to
Kali-Poedjang at the Segara-Anakan (Kinderzee, a bay of the Indian Ocean)
is paid for f 65; a cart f 35.
