Item level itypes would have been the next thing I was planning to look at (talking about the system preference and testing biblio level and item level holds for both). I think the last one is the only you need to test this functionality. Thre are more patched building on top of that and moving more things to the circulation matrix (afaik) so perhaps Srdjan was talking about them.
