There is a system preference for the default highlighting, but there is noting to remove the option. I think libraries are tending toward a sleek, minimal interface not loaded with options that are unfamiliar to their target audience (like Save record for public libraries, for example). It would be great if all those links in the sidebar had an on/off switch. It could either be in one system preference where libraries could decide what options they want in the sidebar, or individual ones for each option, which is the current way.
