When checking in items at the desk, staff can see a patron's total checkouts,
but there’s no quick way to see their overall hold status.
We’re aware of the WaitingNotifyAtCheckin system preference, but we have kept
it disabled because of how cumbersome it would be in daily practice. If
enabled, it triggers a modal pop-up every single time an item with a waiting
hold is scanned which would be especially frustrating during routine book drop
processing when no patron is around—staff would just be constantly clicking
away unnecessary pop-up boxes.
It would be a huge workflow improvement to have a simple, passive summary
counter right in the check-in table—similar to how checkouts are displayed.
Showing something like Holds: 1/3 (1 out of 3 active holds is ready for pickup)
gives staff instant visual context without forcing pop-ups or requiring us to
enable WaitingNotifyAtCheckin. Ideally, this Holds summary would also link to
the patron's Hold tab also.
