I think only one person knows what it was supposed to be for, and that is "He who shall not be named, lest he turn up and try and trademark something" As far as I can tell from scanning the code, we don't use it anywhere else. IE you can set it, but it does nothing. Maybe it was supposed to make that field highlighted in the cataloguing interface or something.
