If Mysqld is running you should be able to see something listening on default port 3306 at all:

# telnet localhost 3306
Trying ::1...
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.

... Disconnect with CTRL+R+] ...

However, you should also be able to connect via SQL command line to get the mysql prompt:

$ mysql -uUSER -pPASSWORD DATABASENAME
Reading table information for completion of table and column names
You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A
