THOMSON-CSF, RAYTHEON WIN NATO CONTRACTS WORTH 120
MILLION EUROS
PARIS, May 24 (AFP) - French electronics company
Thomson-CSF and US Raytheon said on Wednesday they had
jointly won four NATO contracts worth a total 120
million euros (109 million dollars) as part of an
upgrade for the alliance's air command and control
system.
The contracts were awarded to Air Command Systems
International, a 50-50 joint venture set up by
Thomson-CSF and Raytheon in 1996 to bid for NATO's
modernisation of its air traffic capabilities.
The new system will incorporate lessons learnt
from the Kososvo air campaign and will offer a
centralised command system, with decentralised
capability for execution.
The new contracts cover work on the command and
control sites in Belgium, France, Germany and Italy,
and follow on from a 470-million-euro contract awarded
in July 1999 for implementation of a new NATO command
and control system for air operations.
The Franco-US joint venture won the NATO contract
in 1998, beating the rival AMS consortium consisting
of Boeing, Westinghouse, TRW, Racal, Sel and Alcatel.
