Communist Internet Monday 5th May 2000 9.30pm gmt Young Volunteers' Summer Campaign Launched The Youth Union and the Students' Association of Hanoi held a ceremony in Hanoi on May 3 to launch a summer campaign of young volunteers, to start a volunteer week entitled 'Youth Protect the Environment, Prevent Drug Addiction and Promote the Capital of 990-year-old Culture.' Young people will also deploy volunteer socio-cultural work in residential areas. The 'Young Volunteers' Summer' in the capital city this year will include caring for and teaching children and participating in poverty reduction in poor provinces such as Lao Cai, Lai Chau and suburban communes of Hanoi. The young volunteers will also help build 990 compassion houses, promote movements to control drug addiction and social crimes, protect the environment and join volunteer teams working on the Ho Chi Minh Highway project. After the launching ceremony, the volunteer teams and other young people initiated the summer programme by distributing educational pamphlets in residential areas and cleaning up the streets.
