These harmless little games are only aimed at protecting Europe and the United States from imminent attacks by terrorist auks and rogue ringed seals.] WIRE:06/06/2000 06:18:00 ET NATO-led military exercises begin in Baltic Sea STOCKHOLM, June 6 (Reuters) - U.S.-led naval manoeuvres began in the Baltic on Tuesday involving 46 ships, four submarines and 20 aircraft from NATO and all Baltic Sea countries except Russia, in the biggest operation of its kind. The exercises, called Baltops 2000, grouped navies from NATO members Denmark, France, Germany, Poland, Britain and the United States, plus Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Sweden. Russia, which has access to the Baltic at St Petersburg and at Kaliningrad, is not taking part and has criticised the three former Soviet Baltic states for seeking to join the Atlantic alliance. "The emphasis of this exercise is on regional stability, regional understanding and interoperability among the participating forces," the Swedish Navy press office said. Baltops, held annually since 1972, include exercises in gunnery, replenishment-at-sea, undersea warfare, radar tracking, mine countermeasures, seamanship, search and rescue and scenarios dealing with potential real world crises.
