>*CHILDREN MARCH ON U.S. INTERESTS SECTION IN HAVANA FOR ELIAN'S RETURN
>
>Havana, June 12 (RHC)-- More than 200,000 grade school and junior high
>students filled the streets of the Cuban capital on Monday -- marching past
>the U.S. Interests Section to demand the immediate release of Elian
>Gonzalez. The six-year-old boy is still being illegally held in the United
>States, along with his father and immediate family -- unable to leave until
>the appeals process is exhausted.
>
>The march was originally scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed at the
>last minute due to the possibility of rain. Despite their initial
>disappointment, the little ones geared up over the weekend and were more
>than ready Monday morning. Cuban radio and television reporters covered
>preparations for the march and rally, which was broadcast live across the
>island. And thousands were forced to take alternate routes on their way to
>work Monday morning as major streets and avenues in Havana were blocked to
>traffic. But, according to the news reports, no one seemed to mind the
>inconvenience and police were deployed to redirect traffic.
>
>Hundreds of thousands of children, dressed in their red school uniforms,
>flooded the streets and filed past the U.S. Interests Section on Havana's
>Malecon for nearly three hours. While the march continued, thousands more
>gathered in the Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Tribune -- directly in front of
>the building housing Washington's representatives -- to demand that Elian be
>allowed to return home. With Cuban President Fidel Castro and other top
>government leaders in the audience, the youngsters called for an end to
>Washington's lies and legal maneuvers in the case.
>
>Noting that the judicial process could be extended indefinitely, one young
>second grader told the crowd that she and everyone in her school would
>demonstrate as often as necessary until Elian is back home.
>

>*MIAMI KIDNAPPERS ATTEMPT TO DELAY ELIAN'S INEVITABLE RETURN HOME
>
>Havana, June 12 (RHC)-- A special roundtable discussion was aired live on
>Cuban radio and television Sunday afternoon, examining the case of Elian
>Gonzalez.
>
>Panelists agreed that the latest manuevers of the kidnappers are solely
>designed to delay the inevitable return of the six-year-old boy. Referring
>to their intention to appeal the case to the full Atlanta Court of Appeals
>-- made up of 12 members -- attorneys for the Miami kidnappers are stalling
>with another legal trick before eventually taking it to the Supreme Court.
>Journalists on Sunday's roundtable pointed out that the Supreme Court
>recesses from July through October and the kidnappers are hoping to drag the
>process out until after the November presidential elections in the United
>States. Other Cuban experts taking part in the roundtable discussion
>analyzed a recently released report by the U.S. Justice Department. The
>report revealed the presence of armed terrorists in and around the house of
>Elian's great-uncle, Lazaro Gonzalez, in Miami. The Justice Department
>report only confirmed what Cuba had denounced for more than two months.
>Several members of the counterrevolutionary organization Alpha 66 --
>considered armed and dangerous -- were in the group of protesters outside
>the house when Elian was rescued and then reunited with this father.
>
>The roundtable discussion was broadcast live on Cuban television and the
>national radio network, as well as the international shortwave frequencies
>of Radio Havana Cuba.
>
>
>
>*CUBA'S ARAB ASSOCIATION STRONGLY CONDEMNS DELAYS IN RETURNING ELIAN TO CUBA
>
>Havana, June 12 (RHC)-Cuba's Arab Association strongly condemned the legal
>maneuvers that are keeping six-year- old Elian Gonalez and his father from
>returning to the island, according to a a message published on Sunday in
>Havana.
>
>The document charges that the arbitrary US judicial system is holding Elian
>and his father hostage at the bidding of ultra right wing sectors in
>Congress and right-wing Cuban Americas in Miami.
>
>Arab Association President, Alfredo Deriche said that Arabs and their
>descendants who live in Cuba demand an end to what they termed, the inhumane
>Cuban Adjustment Act and Washington's blockade against Cuba.
>
>
>
>*VENEZUELAN PERSONALITIES THANK CUBA FOR MEDICAL HELP IN LAST YEAR'S FLOODS
>
>Caracas, June 12 (RHC)-A large group of Venezuelan personalities and
>professionals issued a document on Sunday expressing their gratitude to the
>world for the Cuban medical personnel who offered their services during last
>December's natural disaster that devastated the country.
>
>The statement was published by the Venezuelan press under the headline
>"Thanks to our Cuban Brothers and Sisters" for their work in extremely
>difficult conditions caused by the floods.
>
>The document adds that the population in the most affected areas "saw, for
>the first time ever, a doctor visiting their homes and offering medical
>attention free of charge. We want to thank all those Cuban mothers who were
>away from their families on Mothers Day in order to assist the Venezuelan
>people." The statement concluded by saying that this gesture of solidarity
>by the Cuban people restores faith in humanity.
>
>
>
>*BRITAIN DONATES AN ELECTRICAL PLANT IN THE ISLE OF YOUTH
>
>Isle of Youth, June 12 (RHC)-British cooperation with Cuba increases each
>day and will continue to do so, according to the first secretary of the
>British embassy in Cuba, Nicolas Kay.
>
>The British diplomat made the statements during the inauguration of an
>electrical plant that was donated by that country as part of a UNESCO
>project in Cocodrilo some 100 kilometers south of Nueva Gerona, in the
>special municipality of the Isle of Youth.
>
>The British official added that he has discovered an important secret; that
>treasures are not hidden, they are found in people and nature. Nicolas Kay
>was referring to the town of Cocodrilo, which is a remote community of some
>300 inhabitants made up of mostly fishermen and forest service workers.
>
>The first secretary of the British embassy expressed his admiration for the
>integrity and the results of Cuba's program of protection and development of
>marine turtles which is underway in the Isle of Youth. He said that over 100
>thousand British tourists are expected to visit Cuba this year, which is an
>expression not only of an interest in visiting the island, but also of
>British business executives increasing relations with the Caribbean island.
>
>
>
>*CUBAN/CARIBBEAN CONGRESS ON HYPERTENSION BEGINS WEDNESDAY
>
>Havana, June 12 (RHC)-The First Congress and the 5th Caribbean Meeting on
>Hypertension will kick off on Wednesday in Havana.
>
>Over 400 delegates and foreign guests from the Caribbean among them Dr.
>Peter Slay, President of the World League on Hypertension, will analyze the
>principal and secondary causes on the so-called, silent illness.
>
>During the meetings the island will demonstrate mechanisms for the control
>of hypertension , the illness which is considered to be among the main
>factors leading to heart disease.
>
>
>
>*US AND CUBAN PHILOSOPHERS WILL MEET IN HAVANA ON JUNE 19TH
>
>Havana, June 12 (RHC)-US and Cuban philosophers will meet in Havana on June
>19th to discuss current issues.
>
>Some 90 professors and 32 students from the Unite States will participate at
>the 12th Encounter between US and Cuban Philosophers and Social Scientists.
>
>According to the Dean of Havana University's School of Philosophy, History
>and Sociology, Ruben Zardoya, the meetings will allow for better
>communications between both country's universities. The US Radical
>Philosophers Association has been participating in these gatherings since
>l985.
>
>Among the topics to be debated in 6 special working commissions are
>Socialist legality, class and race, elite schools, African-American
>political exiles in Cuba, capital punishment and the role of carnaval in
>Angola, Cuba and Argentina.
>
>
>*Viewpoint: ELIAN AND HIS FAMILY CONTINUE TO BE RETAINED IN THE U.S.
>
>The unruly maze of judicial mechanisms in the United States has allowed
>Cuba's enemies to delay the return of Cuban child Elian Gonzalez, who is
>currently in Washington with his father, Juan Miguel Gonzalez, as well as
>other relatives and friends. The anti-Cuban Mafia in Florida, and the ultra
>right-wing, have successfully delayed Elian's return to the island as they
>have managed to continuously take the case to court. Elian's case is similar
>to those of other undocumented immigrants that risk their lives to get into
>the United States and are sent back to their countries by order of the
>Immigration and Naturalization Service.
>
>The U.S. Federal Service decided, last January 5th, that the Cuban child was
>to be sent back to his homeland following his father's claim. It was a case,
>like hundreds others, that takes place in the United States time and again.
>However, this time, some I.N.S. representatives traveled to Cuba to
>substantiate their decision. They traveled to Cuba, to the city of Cardenas
>where Elian's family lives, and met with his father and other relatives. The
>I.N.S. officials had the opportunity to directly corroborate the facts. They
>met with the neighbors and asked people in town for their opinion on the
>case. They were also shown legal documents that prove Juan Miguel's paternal
>rights over his son. They left Cuba with utter certainty of the clarity of
>the case, which is legally supported by Cuban, U.S., and international laws.
>
>However, the case was violently politicized by the Mafia in Miami. They
>kidnapped the child at the house of some distant relatives residing in the
>city. Elian became a political hostage and was submitted to inhumane
>psychological pressures to convince the public that the six-year-old wanted
>to ask for political asylum in the United States. On this basis, the Mafia
>in Miami managed to take the case to trial and undertake the unruly and
>slow-progressing judicial process. Since the beginning, the court should
>have agreed with the I.N.S, which was the entity with the legal power to
>proceed in this case. No foreign court should be left to decide. Juan
>Miguel's paternal rights over Elian are supported by Cuban laws, which are
>the laws of the homeland of both father and son.
>
>The Florida court system has processed other prior cases in a similar way.
>The Mafia in Miami is supported by unscrupulous lawyers that look after
>their own personal and political benefit. With their support, the
>Cuban-American Mafia plans to reach top levels of the U.S. judicial system,
>just to delay Elian's return to Cuba. In any event, the final decision will
>result in the devolution of Elian, sooner or later.
