= N E W S R E L E A S E = = OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE = (PUBLIC AFFAIRS) = WASHINGTON, D.C. 20301 = = PLEASE NOTE DATE ==================================================== No. 384-00 (703)695-0192(media) IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 6, 2000 (703)697-5737(public/industry) U.S. FORCES TRAVEL TO ROMANIA FOR RESCUE EAGLE 2000 Approximately 800 U.S. military members will join with military members from 11 other nations to participate in Exercise Rescue Eagle 2000, July 11-20, 2000, in Romania. The purpose of Rescue Eagle is to develop a common understanding of peace support operations, and to improve small-unit (company-sized and below) interoperability during those operations. The training is designed to deepen military relations, develop interoperable forces and command and control structures, and prepare partners for peacekeeping, search and rescue, humanitarian assistance, and peace support operations. Representative from all branches of the U.S. military, to include active duty and Reserve forces from air, ground and naval units, are scheduled to participate. The exercise is hosted by Romania and conducted in the spirit of the Partnership for Peace program. Other participating nations include Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Moldova, Slovakia and Turkey. The lead American unit is Headquarters, U.S. Marine Forces Europe. Other participating U.S. units include: Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Dover, N.J.; a detachment from the 4th Medical Battalion, 4th Service Support Group, San Diego, Calif.; a company from the 167th Mechanized Infantry Regiment, 31st Armored Brigade, Alabama Army National Guard, Talladega, Ala.; a combat enhanced capability aviation team (medical) from the Tennessee Army National Guard, Chattanooga, Tenn.; a detachment from the 622nd Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, 622nd Regional Support Group, 22nd Air Force, Miami, Fla.; and a detachment from the 52nd Medical Group, 52nd Fighter Wing, Spangdahlem AB, Germany. The exercise scenario involves the deployment and employment of combined forces for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations in the wake of a mock earthquake. Training will focus on staff planning, medical training, casualty treatment and evacuation, sea-air rescue, checkpoint operations, patrolling and fixed-point security, and convoy security.
