WOLFF Special to The Sun One of 10 Pastors for Peace caravans taking food, supplies and medicine to Cuba will stop in Gainesville tonight. As part of a fund-raiser, the Gainesville-Cuba Friendship Network is sponsoring a panel discussion. The caravan last year distributed 100 metric tons of food, supplies and medicines, said Joe Courter of the Civic Media Center, a Gainesville activist organization. The local event, to be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1521 NW 34th St. at 6:30 p.m., will be highlighted by a panel discussion about the U.S. trade embargo against Cuba, including the recent changes put in place by the House of Representatives. The caravan is one of 10 nationwide that will be routed to McAllen, Texas, and then to Tampico, Mexico, where the supplies will be loaded on a cargo ship. About 75 people will travel with the caravan including a boys baseball team from Garberville, Calif., which will play several games while in Cuba, said the Rev. Glen Dickson, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. "I felt for a long time that the church has a responsibility to minister to people who are needy; the people in Cuba are certainly needy," Dickson said. Dickson has been on four trips to Cuba, including an initial trip at the invitation of the family of Pedro Medina. Medina was executed last year in Florida and Dickson served as his spiritual adviser. Leading up to the event was a "packing-party" Saturday during which medical supplies were prepared for shipment on the caravan, Courter said. The project is the effort of Veterans for Peace, which has a local chapter in Gainesville, said group member Dr. Bill Warrick. The medical supplies are a real asset in Cuba because, while they have free medical care available, the medicine is not available, Dickson said. The supplies have been collected from various sources around Gainesville and include sample medications, a wheel chair and bandages, Warrick said.
