Qatar Backs Out Of Hosting 2001 WTO Meeting

Qatar, which was designated as the venue for a World Trade
Organization meeting of trade ministers in late 2001, has withdrawn
from hosting the event, according to diplomatic sources in Seoul,
South Korea. Reasons behind the move were reportedly a lack of hotel
space and because the meeting, which is typically scheduled for
November, might conflict with the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
The meeting, held every two years, now needs a new host country, but
nations are reluctant to undertake the endeavor after a similar meeting
sparked violent anti-globalization protests in Seattle last year.
