>FAO provides rice seeds to farmers in Dong Thap

>The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation has provided US $399,000
>to farmers in Dong Thap, the worst-hit province of the worst flooding to hit
>the Mekong delta in 40 years.

>The grant, signed over on December 8 in Hanoi by representatives of the
>Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and FAO, will be spent on buying
>1,000 tonnes of high quality rice seeds to provide to the local farmers for
>the winter-spring crop.
>
>About 50,000-70,000 farmers in the districts of Tan Hong, Hong Ngu, Tam Nong,

>
>The Mekong delta province of An Giang has built 136 residential areas and
>evacuated about 18,000 households, who live in the low-lying areas, to live in
>safer areas temporarily in the flood season.

>According to statistics, about 119,000 households in An Giang will live in
>deeply submerged areas when flooding occurs; more than 24,000 others have no
>land, but live temporarily on canals.
