Serbs, Albanian Rebels in Violent Battle in Southern
Serbia

PRISTINA, Feb 13, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) A
violent battle between the Yugoslav army and Albanian
separatists in which heavy artillery, mortars and
tanks were used raged for four hours in southern
Serbia on Monday, a separatist military commander
said.

The officer, Commander Luli of the self-proclaimed
Liberation Army of Presevo, Medvedja and Bujanovac
(UCPMB), said the battle had lasted most of the
afternoon, in the course of which "the Serbs tried to
infiltrate" the zone controlled by the UCPMB.

Luli told AFP that the Yugoslav army had during the
battle brought out heavy artillery, tanks and mortars
to bombard separatist positions near the villages of
Bukovac and Gornje Shoshaje.

He said his troops had only started returning fire
once they came under attack.

According to a member of the Serbo-Yugoslavian mission
in Bujanovac, Milovan Cogulic, quoted by the Yugoslav
news agency Tanjug, however, "the Albanian terrorists
fired... several mortar shells from Bukovac on
Yugoslav army positions at Golemo Brdo. The army
counter-attacked only when the attackers approached
within 400 meters (yards)."

The UCPMB also "launched a frontal attack on police
positions" on Monday afternoon, Cogulic said.

The latest clashes come amid fresh efforts to
negotiate a political solution in the troubled region
bordering Kosovo. ((c) 2001 Agence France Presse)
