Belarusian Pro-Lukashenko Lawmaker Brands OSCE As
'Throwback to the Cold War'

MINSK, Feb 28, 2001 -- (RFE/RL) Alyaksandr Shpileuski,
deputy chairman of the commission for international
affairs in the Chamber of Representatives, said on 26
February that Belarus "has been actually devoid of its
legal right to develop relations with European
structures," Belapan reported.

Shpileuski was commenting on last week's sitting of
the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Permanent Committee
that did not grant membership in the OSCE
Parliamentary Assembly to the Chamber of
Representatives.

Shpileuski said the OSCE is a "throwback to the Cold
War," adding that it is today a "body for exerting
pressure on Russia."

Shpileuski believes Belarus's official legislature is
discriminated against by the OSCE Parliamentary
Assembly because Minsk is building a union state with
Moscow.

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly did not recognize last
year's elections to Belarus's Chamber of
Representatives as democratic and fair.
