Maoists' Threat to Schools

NAWALPARASI, March 9 - Maoist-wing students' union - ANNFSU (Revolutionary)-
forced some schools in the district to refund examinations fee and change
the national anthem, according to a report received here.

Shanti Nikunja High School in Pithauli refunded the examinations fee to its
students and changed the existing national anthem after the school received
a warning letter from the student union.

A parents' meeting held on 1 March also decided to accept the union's 20-day
ultimatum.

Likewise, Bhimsen Adarsha High School, Rambas, Jana Jyoti Higher Secondary
School, Pragatinagar and Laxmi High School, Amarawati have also changed the
national anthem to be prayed in the morning assembly.

Teachers from the schools said that Maoist-wing students' union had been
putting pressure on those schools where headmasters had political
affiliation with the ruling Nepali Congress.Kathmandu Post

Student stone vehicles

Kathmandu, 11 March: Two students were injured when police tried to stop a
student union protest demanding a 50 percent concession on public bus fares.
The student union close to the Nepal Communist Party (Marxist-Leninist)
tried to stop traffic near Bhaktapur stoning several vehicles including one
owned by a Member of Parliament Sunday.

The students said they will continue to disrupt traffic at various points in
Kathmandu Valley Monday
to press their demand. The have been demanding concessions for all students
upon presentation of
identification papers since several months. Transport workers have so far
rejected the demand as
