"A civilian was killed by an Albanian extremist sniper when he happened to pass by a police station," Prime Minister Ljubco Georgevski told reporters late Wednesday. The victim, who was identified as an ethnic Albanian, died on the way to hospital in Skopje, the head of Tetovo hospital, Raim Taci, told AFP on Thursday. Fifteen police officers were injured in the fighting, and three were still in hospital in a serious condition, Taci said. None of the officers -- at least three of whom were ethnic Albanians -- were in danger. The injuries were sustained in a day of fierce clashes with ethnic Albanian rebels who say they are fighting for the rights of Macedonia's large Albanian minority. The fighting, which included mortar and heavy machinegun fire, came as the guerrillas opened a second front near the northwestern town. Macedonian security forces have already chased them out of bases on the northern border with Kosovo. As the fighting raged in the hills around Tetovo, thousands of Albanians turned out in the town center to show their support for the rebels and call for the government to talk directly with the fighters. A journalist was beaten up by the demonstrators, Taci said. The night was calm except for some shots fired near the the village of Selce on the outskirts of Tetovo at around 5:30 am (0430 GMT), police said.
